The artist Jean-Claude Deveaux, discovered marquetry and the richness of wood veneers haphazardly during his artistic peregrinations. If he was, on one hand, enthusiastic about the works of art staggering with technicity and creativity of the 16th Italian masters, and the French ones of the 18th, he observed on the other hand, that the only creations in marquetry now, dated back to the early 20th, with Gallé, Majorelle and l'Ecole de Nancy. Since, only a few generations of very good craftsmen remained active, but mainly concerned by restauring or copying. Creator and interested, he wished to learn this technique with confirmed marquetry makers, and experiment the new possibilities of material, light and colours he could feel in it. His aim was to revive this expression, which was about to be forgotten, and have it re-discovered by creators and "amateurs" as a real artistic one !. After these years of experimentation, specialists in marquetry and Decorative Arts, now widely consider him as a highly skilled technician, but above all, as one of the most creative renewers of this end of century. Year after year, mahogany, sycomore, maple, rose wood and many other veneers, became the natural mediuma of his pictorial creation. He considers marquetry no less than other artistic expressions such as oil painting, drawing, watercolor, mosaïc, stained glass or tapestry. Marquetry is for him the junction point of all his pleasures : drawing, colours, creation, manual dexterity, wood, experimentation, exploration and beautiful work. He refuses the eternal opposition Fine Arts / Handicraft. This technique, with means relating to crafts, alows him to realise a graphic work reflecting his humourous and witty sensibility. The astonishing textures, but specially his fine cutting of the veneers and the delicate precision in gathering them all, are a real pleasure to the eyes (and the fingers!) of the marquetry lover, who, eager to feel more, comes close to one of his pannels. His actual inspiration : fabrics, which is a real paradoxe for this material and technique. In his decorative pannels, knots and witty foldings of square patterned towels or suspended to invisible threads or simply twisted or floating striped silky fabrics, follow one another. Some are figurative nearly trompe-l'oeil, some geometrical nearly abstract. In both cases, one's eyes are amazed by the light and brightness of the colours and the satin silky look of these real delicate mosaïcs of stained veneers. His audacity pushes him now towards big size incredible patchworks of over two to three thousand pieces of different species of wood. All his realisations are one offs or numbered examplaries for furniture. |
